WORLD SOCIAL RANKING
“If I were to rank everyone in the world socioeconomically, where would I rank in the leader board?”
Objective
When I first set out to create this quiz, there were a number of criteria that i had wanted to accomplish.
- I wanted a definitive answer, something concrete, a percentage number that I could pin point exactly.
- I wanted to ask questions that cannot be answered subjectively like “Do you feel happy?”. But to ask objective questions like "Do you have access to electricity?"
Problems Encountered
- I soon realized that it is nearly impossible to create a well rounded picture as there was a disproportionate amount of data within the social classes. There were significantly more data on the lower social classes and very little on the higher classes.
- Different countries' data cannot be directly compared to others, since economies are different, thus the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) varies from country to country. Additionally, not all countries have the same amount of data to work with. Ex: The US has significantly more data than Viet Nam (my country).
I did it anyways :)
I suppose these are the inherent limitations of trying to compare data on a global scale, but I still wanted some type of answer since there is still some data I could work with that included all countries, albeit more on the lower classes.
Using the data I had accumulated, I was able to create a framework of questions that takes into account the regional differences between the countries, access to resources, and opportunities.
How do you determine a person’s socioeconomic status(SES)?
Some of the common ways researchers use are : Education, Income, and Occupation, family sizes, accessibility to resources, subjective view of social status,... These are all amazing foundations to work on, but in my opinion these don't account for regional differences.

- The average Primary School Completion Rate for 2019 based on 63 countries was 90.19 percent
https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/drinking-water
- In 2017, 71% of the global population (5.3 billion people) used a safely managed drinking-water service – that is, one located on premises, available when needed, and free from contamination.
- 90% of the global population (6.8 billion people) used at least a basic service. A basic service is an improved drinking-water source within a round trip of 30 minutes to collect water.
- 785 million people lack even a basic drinking-water service, including 144 million people who are dependent on surface water.
Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces.
https://ourworldindata.org/energy-access#access-to-electricity
- 13% of the world do not have access to electricity (roughly 940 million people)
- 40% of the world do not have access to clean fuels for cooking (roughly 3 billion people)
The use of solid fuels for cooking is a primary risk factor for deaths and morbidity from indoor air pollution.
- 400 million of now more than 7.2 billion people in the world lack access to essential health services

- Before the pandemic, most of the world was falling into either the High Vulnerability group (14%) or the Moderate Vulnerability group (39%). The rest, 47%, fell into the Low Vulnerability group.
- Countries Categorized by Incomes (GNI per Capita)
